11:00- Tom Galloway, Regional Councillor, Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee
Waterloo Region is reportedly piling on the debt. The Record reports, the debt currently stands at $428-million – more than double the figure from 2009. The paper says the debt is expected to climb by another $120-million by the end of this year. Infrastructure projects are reportedly the main source of the debt. Regional budget and finance chair, Tom Galloway tells the paper, “I certainly don’t want to say that there’s no concern because that would not be true.” He adds, however, “It’s well within our parameters to control and manage the debt.” Staff has been going over the current 10-year capital plan with a fine tooth comb, in an effort to see how it can pay the bills without racking up more red ink.

Carney, his family and his friends at least had the opportunity to shred indoors at the Pipes and Rails facility at Duncan McIntosh Arena. The facility hosted lessons, drop-in sessions and even competitions during the winter months. “I would go usually four to five times a week and lots of my friends would literally go every single day, every single session,” Carney said. Earlier this year, city council voted to close it down. A staff report cited safety concerns and the need to replace $150,000 worth of equipment, as well as a plan to consider building a $200,000 outdoor facility in Churchill Park next year. According to the report, the indoor facility – originally an old rental hall attached to the arena – was never designed to accommodate skateboard equipment and is considered “less than ideal for accommodating modern skateboarding and BMX features”.
