Several young Canadians are not participating in organized sports, and the reason is clear: the cost is just too high.
So says a poll commissioned by CIBC and KidSport, a non-profit that helps families with equipment and registration fees. Results from a survey of 2,010 people show that one-third of Canadian children between the ages of 3 and 17 years old do not partake in things like hockey, dance, baseball or tennis due to the cost involved, said a Thursday news release. The poll found that parents with children in organized sports spend an average of nearly $1,000 per kid each year. 61% of respondents named enrollment fees as the barrier keeping kids out of organized sports, while 52% mentioned equipment costs. At 38%, soccer was played by the largest number of children, followed by swimming at 22% and basketball at 19%. The sports played by the least number of kids included skating lessons and tennis at 6% each, and football at 5%.
