Local firefighters spread the word on fire safety

Firefighters are knocking on 45-hundred doors across Waterloo this summer – as the annual ‘home smoke alarm campaign’ is underway.

Homeowners will be asked a series of questions to determine their knowledge base when it comes to home fire safety.

Questions include:

How much time do you have to safely escape your home if a fire starts?

How many smoke alarms do you need in your home as per the Ontario Fire Code?

How often do you need to test and replace the batteries in your smoke alarm?

Do you think smoke alarms are an effective means of saving your life in the event of a fire?

John Percy is the Public Education Officer with Waterloo Fire Rescue.

He says that even though it’s mandatory – 50 per cent of homes did not have working smoke alarms on every level and outside all sleeping areas.
