Kitchener’s flag policy amended, community flagpole added

Kitchener City council has revised its flag policy.
Councillors Dan Glenn-Graham and Berry Vrbanovic brought forward a motion Monday night for a new community flagpole.
A flag flap erupted several months ago when the city said flying the PRIDE flag outside City Hall violated city by-laws.
The new community flagpole will be raised at Speakers Corner at King and Benton. A current flagpole in the Duke Street Gardens at the corner of Duke and Young will now be designated as a community flagpole.
This will cost the city around $2, 500 and will be funded out of the 2014 capital budget.
The original 1995 policy will now be amended and those two locations can be used to honour national or independence days, support fundraising drives and celebrate multicultural and civic organizations or events important to Kitchener residents.
“By supporting this comprehensive and well-researched motion, this council demonstrates vision and shows leadership by updating this old policy,” said Councillor Frank Etherington, who supported both motions.
Groups can be excluded if they condone discrimination; exploit, condone or incite hatred or violence; demean a person or group; undermine human dignity; or insult a city program, event or staff.
