There’s a growing demographic out there who say they don’t vote in elections because they don’t like any of the candidates. These disgruntled individuals can spoil a ballot – but that’s a rather meek and ineffective way to protest. What if they had a ‘none of the above’ option on their ballots? According to a democracy watchdog, voters in Ontario and Alberta already do have that option. Democracy Watch asked Elections Ontario to advertise the fact that voters have the legal right under section 53 of the Elections Act to decline their ballot, vote “none of the above” and have it counted separately from a spoiled ballot.

Canadians have long paid more for gas than Americans, but the difference today is the greatest it’s ever been. BMO Economics says their research shows that although U.S. gasoline prices have risen 10% this year, they remain within the relatively narrow band established in the past three years. Canadian drivers haven’t been as lucky of late, no thanks to a weaker loonie. In US dollars, Canadians are paying about 30% more than Americans for gasoline. Rising gas prices have acted as an unofficial “tax hike” on consumers, depressing spending in the rest of the economy.
