Victory for Kitchener food truck operators

A big win for food truck operators in Kitchener.Brad Schmuck, owner of Schmuck Truck applauds councils unanimous decision to lower licensing fees from nearly $2,000 to a base fee of $350.

But Schmuck tells 570 News it is disappointing that they’re still not able to operate on a permanent basis downtown Kitchener, “The BIA has done a lot to help build the downtown, and we want to help build the downtown too, we’re committed to making the downtown a great area to come to. We’re just going to take babysteps with everyone involved. We’re not here to rock the boat, we just want to sell our food.”

For $150 extra paid to the BIA, food truck operators can take part in the Thursday night program. The city is also planning  two food truck festivals.

There’s also going to be a pilot project at Centre in the Square, where a few food trucks will be able to set up at a time and Schmuck says food truck operators are like a family and he doesn’t see there being a problem with only a few trucks being allowed at one time, “We coordinate where we’re going, different events, making sure we have coverage from all the trucks in the area who are invovled. So there will be trucks in Kitchener, trucks in Waterloo and hopefully there will be trucks in Cambridge soon too.”

City council also agreed to change the distance trucks can be from the closet restaurant from 200 to 20 metres.
