Preparing your property to deal with mosquitoes

Wearing DEET repellent, along with wearing longer sleeves are obvious keys in protecting yourself when it comes to the dreaded mosquito bite, but clearing your property of stagnant water is also key.

Brenda Miller is the Manager of Health Protection and Investigation with the Region of Waterloo Public Health. She tells 570 News that clearing your property of stagnant water is also important in protecting yourself.

Miller says that it’s important to take a look outside around your property where there may be standing water as well as freshening up the water in ornamental ponds.

“If you’ve got a swimming pool and you’ve got a cover on there and the water is stagnating or collecting in there, you want to drain that water off. Maybe take a look at the eavestroughs and clean those out, get the water flowing and moving through there.”

Miller goes on to say that if you’ve got some shrubbery around your house where mosquitoes like to nest, you should trim those back, along with turning over any mulch and compost.
