The Grand River Conservation Authority is issuing a flood warning for the Upper Grand, Conestogo and Speed Rivers in West Montrose.
With mild temperatures forecast for the weekend, and rain on the way homes in those areas could see flooding over the next few days.
“We’re still getting a lot of snow melt in the Northern part of the watershed” says Dave Shultz, with the GRCA. “We’ve had to increase the discharges from our reservoirs plus whatever is entering the Grand and distribute it. The result is that we’re going to see some high water in West Montrose starting this evening.”
“There’s houses that are close to the river and then areas in the trailer park that will be affected” adds Shultz. “We’ve sent notices to the flood coordinators and to the regional police, so they’ll be going to knock on doors to tell people what’s going to be happening.”
Temperatures yesterday pushed flows on those rivers to flooding thresholds, causing road closures and rising water levels in reservoirs.
Families are advised to talk to their children about the dangers of being close to running water.
Officials say more flood warnings could be issued.
