“Flood warning or advisory expected within a week” says GRCA

The Grand River Conservation Authority is expected to issue advisories or warnings later this week about flooding across the watershed.
The authority says that with temperatures staying above zero during the day, waterways are likely to swell as snow and ice melt.
One of the biggest concerns this year is debris leftover from the December ice storm.
“We are going to see a lot of debris coming downstream and the risk there is that if it gets trapped in a culvert or under a bridge, it could cause localized flooding” says Dave Schultz, manager of communications for the Grand River Conservation Authority. “It can be very difficult to remove.”
They’re also reminding parents to talk to their children about the dangers of being close to waterways, as the ice is getting thin.
“It would be good thing for parents to talk to their kids about this” adds Schultz. “The river can still be attractive to people who think it’s safe to get out there, but it’s not safe at all.”
Areas more prone to flooding include Ayr, New Hamburg and West Montrose due to the excessive snowfall this year.
