11:00am- Dan Leger, Freelance Journalist and Author, Re: Leger’s new book “Duffy: Stardom to Senate to Scandal” tells the story of Mike Duffy’s rise to the top in Canadian media, his entanglement with the Harper Conservatives, and the scandal that made him one of the most controversial figures in contemporary politics.
11:30am- Jay Dolmage, Professor in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo, Author of “Disability Rhetoric”, Re: The Paralympic Games in Sochi wrapped up yesterday, but Dolmage believes that there are contradictions around disability and sponsorship at those Games. Dolmage says “The Paralympics have become little more than an opportunity for sponsors to use inspirational stories to sell products. The games also provide an opportunity for the real inequities experienced by people with disabilities to be hidden…In Russia, Human Rights Watch released a report in advance of the Paralympics indicting Russia for its treatment of people with disabilities. The true risk is that the Paralympics will do nothing to change these conditions, and instead will simply hide them behind feel-good stories about athletes apparently overcoming their disabilities.”
