Local pubs opening for gold medal game

Local pubs and bars are opening their doors early as Canada’s men’s hockey team play for gold at the Olympics this weekend.

Morty’s Pub on King Street North in Waterloo will be opening at 6:45 Sunday morning, and they’re also taking reservations ahead of the big game.

Moose Winooski’s on Heldmann’s Road in Kitchener will also be opening at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning, and they’re taking reservations also.

Both pubs will not be serving alcohol, however, but will be offering other breakfast items.

Moose Winooski’s is offering an all-you-can-eat buffet until the second intermission, and they’re also stocked for non-alcohol beer and virgin caesar.

“Believe it or not, we’re cheering for Canada” says Bill Sigfried, Director of Operations for Moose Winooski’s. “We firmly believe Canada is going to bring it home. I think Carey Price had the game of his life yesterday and I think he’s going to shine for Canada. We’re predicting at least a two goal pillow Canada.”

“The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic, we were completely rammed on Friday. Everybody was in good spirits, and had a great time cheering Canada on” says Jay Taylor, Manager of Morty’s Pub. “We are cheering for our boys from Canada and we are going to win ourselves a gold medal.”

“We have a limited menu” adds Taylor. “We are doing it regardless of whether we can sell alcohol or not, because we see it as a huge community event.”

People planning to come out and celebrate are encouraged to wear red and white to cheer on the the men’s hockey team.

Canada will face off against Sweden at 7 a.m. EST on Sunday.
