Canadian medal count up to 14

Canada’s Dominique Maltais has won a silver medal in women’s snowboard cross at the Sochi Olympics.  She finished well back of the Czech Republic’s Eva Samkova on a mild, sunny afternoon in Sochi, Russia. It is Maltais’s second medal in the event. She won bronze at the 2006 Turin Olympics.  Defending Olympic champion Maelle Ricker of West Vancouver, B-C, fell in her quarter-final heat.

A month ago, Jan Hudec could barely walk. Now he has an Olympic medal around his neck.  The Calgary skier won bronze for Canada in the men’s super-G at the Sochi Olympics, tying American veteran Bode Miller for third in one minutes 18.67 seconds.

Brad Jacobs has put Canada’s men’s curling team in to the Olympic semifinals after an 8-6 win over the United States. It’s the fifth-straight win by the rink from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario,  which struggled at the start of the tournament.  Canada plays China later (at 10 a-m Eastern).

Carey Price will start in goal for Team Canada in the final game of the preliminary round against Finland (at noon, Eastern) Price stopped 19 of 20 shots against Norway. Roberto Luongo, who shut out Austria, will be the backup. Martin St. Louis takes his turn as the healthy scratch forward as Patrick Sharp rejoins the lineup.

Canadian ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir step on to the ice to start what they say will be their final Olympic appearance. The pair is the defending champion heading into the short program. The favourites are Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who beat Virtue and Moir for the 2013 world championship.

Canada isn’t a bobsled power but there’s reason to believe Justin Kripps and Bryan Barnett have a shot at the Olympic podium today (starting at 11:15 a.m. Eastern). The pair is competing in the two man fresh from winning a first World Cup event in January. Americans Steven Holcomb and Curtis Tomasevicz are the ones to catch as the overall World Cup champions.
