11:00am- Trudy Beaulne, Executive Director of the Social Planning Council Kitchener-Waterloo and Community Information Centre Waterloo Region, Re: The “Tax Is Not A Four Letter Word” book tour is in Kitchener this afternoon. Co-hosted by the Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Ontario, this event will be at Kitchener City Hall Rotunda starting at noon. “Tax Is Not A Four-Letter Word” is an attempt to seed a more balanced discussion on taxes and their role in society. The books contributors disagree about many issues, but they all agree on 2 things: that we need a conversation about taxes, and that must include a real assessment of the consequences and costs of tax cuts now and for the longer term.
11:30am- Dave Hammond, Associate Professor in the School of Public Health & Health Systems at the University of Waterloo, Re: Hammond co-authored a report published by the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact at the University of Waterloo that found today’s teens have much lower smoking rates than most adults. The report shows that smoking prevalence is highest – 22 per cent – among young adults aged 25-34-years old. That’s double the smoking rate for teens.
