Canada opens play at World Juniors

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for junior hockey fans.
The IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships gets going today in Sweden. Canada will face Germany in its first game at 7:30am EST.
Kitchener Rangers grad. Ryan Murphy played for Team Canada last year, but there are no Rangers on the Canadian squad this year. However, Radek Faksa will suit up for the Czech Republic.
At last year’s tournament, Canada lost the bronze medal game to Russia.
We talked to Rangers Head Coach, Troy Smith about the World Juniors before the Christmas break.
“The top 25…I think that was a good thing, made their camp smaller so they could start teaching right away. I hope they win because I’m proud of my country and proud of Hockey Canada.”
Smith says his focus right now is on the Rangers, but hopefully down the road I will be able to be a part of that staff.
Smith coached Team Ontario’s Under 17 team five times at the World Hockey Challenge.
