Local EMS in ‘code red’ this morning

A ‘code red’ was declared a few times Wednesday morning for the Region of Waterloo Emergency Medical Services.
EMS across the province have a process in place – code yellow and red — which shows when resources are getting down to critical levels.
Earlier, a high level of call volume tied up the 22 ambulances in Waterloo Region.
An ambulance from Guelph Wellington was utilized; a vehicle on standby from Hamilton was not needed.
Stephan VanValkenburg is the Director & Chief of Emergency Medical Services. He says Waterloo Region has also assisted other municipalities when needed.
The year-to-date average is 0.33 per cent spent in ‘code red’, which has been trending down over the last quarter.
