Public works building in Mapleton Township destroyed by fire

Five fires have hit the Drayton, Ontario area since Thursday, one of the latest causing millions of dollars worth of damage.

The public works building in Mapleton Township was destroyed in a blaze Friday night.

The building on Side Road 16 housed snow ploughs and other equipment.

Fire Chief Rick Richardson says the fire broke out after 6 PM, and crews went in to the building and drove the trucks out to save them from being destroyed.

The roof of the building collapsed. Crews will start work on rebuilding the structure on Monday.

Officials say the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious and damage is estimated to be in the millions.

Richardson says crews have been so busy, with 6 calls in the last 48 hours as well …. including a house fire, a corn drier fire, and a basemenet fire.

He says none of these blazes are related.
