The Progressive Conservative party’s finance critic says he’ll stop claiming the M-P-P’s housing allowance.
The Liberals and New Democrats took Thornhill M-P-P Peter Shurman to task yesterday for claiming more than 20-thousand dollars last year for a second residence in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Shurman has an apartment in Toronto.
The Liberals and N-D-P accused Shurman of financing his retirement residence at the expense of taxpayers.
P-C Leader Tim Hudak says while Shurman followed all existing rules, it’s clear that the system needs to be changed.
Hudak says Shurman has agreed to stop claiming the accommodation allowance for the Niagara house, but said nothing in a statement last night about repaying the money.
Liberal house leader John Milloy says Shurman may have found a loophole, but certainly violated the spirit of the guidelines.
Members of all three parties can claim the housing expense if their primary residence is more than 50 kilometres from the legislature in downtown Toronto.
