Thousands attend funeral for fallen Guelph police officer

Thousands of mourners gathered in Guelph yesterday to pay tribute to a police officer who died in the line of duty.

Constable Jennifer Kovach died last week when her cruiser crossed the centre line and collided with a Guelph Transit bus.

The 26-year-old was responding to another officer’s call for assistance.

Church bells tolled as residents watched police from across North America slowly march through downtown to a public funeral at the Sleeman Centre.

Matt Jotham, president of the Guelph Police Association, said Kovach’s death has weighed heavily on the close-knit police service.

Guelph’s Police Chief Bryan Larkin described Kovach as a vibrant and dynamic woman who fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a police officer.

Flags across the province were flown at half staff.
