Protecting your animals in the cold

The cold snap continues in Waterloo Region and don’t forget, your dog only has one coat.

Inspector with the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society, Gary Boes tells 570 News that dog owners should only go for short walks this week, and it’s ok to skip a walk to two.

Boes also says that boots and winter pet accessories do help a little, but just like people, animals can easily get very cold after a short period outdoors.

He recommends keeping all animals inside this week.

The K-W Humane Society would like to remind people that provincial and criminal laws around animal care all now carry heavy penalties for pet owners who fail to provide proper food, shelter and water for their animals.

Fines, jail time and being banned from owning animals are all possible consequences.

If you see a stray or an animal that’s been left out in the cold, you can call the Humane Society at 519-745-5615.
