With the kids back in class today after the holiday break, a teachers union official says it’s status quo in local public elementary schools.
Despite Premier McGuinty’s plea to teachers to resume participation in extracurricular activities, Greg Weiler, president of the Waterloo chapter of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, tells 570 News, nothing has changed.
He says those teachers who wish to withdraw their involvement are free to do so. “They’ll have to make their own decision, but I expect that many, or more than were doing it in the fall will probably make a choice to reduce of stop doing voluntary activities”, says Weiler.
Weiler says teachers have been left with no choice as a means of expressing their disapproval of contracts being imposed on them – cutting their wages and freezing most of their wages.
He adds it’s up to the individual teacher to decide for themself how to respond, saying the teachers’ federation does not endorse particular position on the matter.
