Kitchener’s 2013 Capital Budget

City of Kitchener Councillors look at the 2013 Capital Budget on Thursday.

Cutting down trees infested by the Emerald Ash Borer took up much of the conversation. Removal of the trees is forecast to cost the city $4.3 Million over ten years.

“All that amount really does, is removes the ash trees that are impacted by the emerald ash borer. It’s very important we get that money in there as a minimum because that will mitigate the real dangerous situations where you can have these trees which are dying and could fall over.” Scott Davey, Chair of the Finance and Corporate Services Committee said.

In order to replant the trees claimed by this operation, it would cost another $6.75 million, which Davey said is currently not funded.

Also discussed, the partial funding to complete the Trails Master Plan. Kitchener has $4.7 million over the next ten years for this project, but is $6.3 million short.

The Capital budget is funded from a number of sources, including development charges from building permits, gas and hydro revenue, and the Economic Development Investment Fund.

Public consultation is January 7th, and final budget day is January 17th.
