Region crunching the numbers

The first step in establishing the Region of Waterloo’s 2013 budget is being taken Wednesday.
Regional staff is presenting a report which not only details where almost half a percentage point of the regional tax levy could be shaved off, and explains what budget challenges the region faces.
Tom Galloway, Budget Committee Chair, told 570 News residents are likely to face a tax levy increase.
“We’ve always tried to keep it within the realm of inflation, certainly on average. This year is going to be a real challenge, particularly with the police budget, once you add it on.”
The Regional Police Service budget will be tabled November 7th, and is the regions largest cost.
The opening base budget for direct regional programs set to go up 2.24%, again, not including the police budget. The sustainable savings staff have found for consideration total 0.48%, or $1.9 Million.
