Weber Street widening

The Weber Street of the future took two key steps forward at Regional Council last night, with Councillors approving two elements of the Weber Street widening project.
Staff will negotiate to buy up 20 remaining properties on Weber between Wilhelm and Guelph streets in Kitchener.
Coun. Tom Galloway told 570 News the region has already purchased 12 properties along that stretch, in advance of this project, “as they came up on the market, just naturally…but now obviously we need the rest of the properties and we’re negotiating directly with each owner.”
Councillors also approved the design of a rail overpass north of Victoria.
Senior Project Manager Peter Linn told 570 news the bridge features include textured concrete retaining walls, showcasing some of that part of Kitchener’s manufacturing history, “that will depict buttons, felt, leather and timber,” Linn said.
“In addition to that, there’s special lighting that will be installed on the bridge and along the sidewalks.”
The overpass will be made with self-weathering heavy steel girders, with a water run-off system to keep rust from staining the sidewalks below.
All councillors present voted in favour of the design, except for Coun. Jean Haalboom.
“I would feel more comfortable, if there had been some kind of sketch or drawing,” she said, to illustrate what that run-off system will look like.
Construction is expected to start next April, and is scheduled to finish by late 2014.
