Regional Council approves engineering contract for LRT

Regional Council has unanimously approved a consulting agreement with an engineering firm that will provide General Consulting Services for the LRT project.
Parsons Brinkerhoff Halsall Incorporated will overlook the Rapid Transit project in a variety of ways. They will, among other things, outline exactly what the product is, conduct inspections of the rail line and train cars, and will be involved in management and cost control as well.
“This is a very big step and it’s another really major building block in terms of moving the project forward because they are going to be very very key in the whole project”, said councillor Jim Wideman after the Regional Council meeting on April 25th.
The contract is for an initial term of three years at an upset fee limit of $16.58 million. Wideman says if after the three years the Region needs to retain the firm, it would be on a much lower scale, “They would certainly have a dramatically reduced number of people on the project after after three years. The first three years are really the main period of time where they’re going to be designing and putting specs out.”
The firm was one of five that put together proposals for the Region, and was unanimously agreed upon.
It is important to note that Parsons Brinkerhoff Halsall will not be the firm building the LRT, that will be a different engineering firm.
