10- After an overwhelming demand a local company is building Kitchener’s first “smoke free” rental high rise. The whole building including unit balconies are smoke free. London already has one. Tenants had to sign a seperate addendum to their lease before moving in and so far in London no one has had to be evicted. It’s like buildings that say no to pets… people still bring pets. Question: Will this work? Is this discrimination? 10:30 – New Zealand hopes to become a Nation of Non-smokers by 2025. The Health Minister is considering raising the cost of a pack of cigarettes to the equivalent of 80 dollars Canadian. They would do this in stages. The price for a pack of cigarettes would go up to almost 50 dollars next year and then would increase by 10% a year until 2020. Survey suggest raising the increase of cigarettes thru taxes is the best way to encourage smokers to quit and discourage young people from ever lighting up. Question: Will a smoke free residence or a price increase to $80 a pack stop people from smoking?
