Wild storm rolls through Waterloo Region

A brief, but wicked storm rolled through Waterloo Region this morning.
It packed thunderstorms, hail and heavy rain.
In Cambridge, the region’s Director of Emergency Medical Services, John Prno tell 570 News there was a near miss when two people were nearly struck by lightning this morning at the Toyota plant. Prno says they were carrying umbrellas and experienced a tingling feeling in their arms.
As well, there were several fires in the Region.
Kitchener Fire Platoon Chief Steve Zurell tells 570 News that lightning blew off the fuse box at home on Trussler and that the damage estimate was $20,000 between a shed and a vehicle.
Around the same time, lightning took the blame for another fire in Kitchener. this one on Forest Edge Trail, Doon South area of Kitchener, a roof top antenna was struck.
On Beechwood, in Waterloo, lightning struck a house without causing a fire. However, the electrical system was damaged, and some drywall blown off.
Meantime, just a few more sleeps until spring officially arrives and it appears we will steam into a new season with much of the same: unseasonably mild weather.
Temperature records have been falling across the province and much of the country for that matter.
The normal high for today is plus 4 and 570 News weather specialist John Wilson forecasts it will top up at 17.
Looking at Environment Canada’s long range forecast: the high for the first full day of spring – Wednesday – is 19.
