Good and bad news for allergy sufferers

All the warm weather may have allergy sufferers preparing for symptoms but a local allergist says this season may not be as bad as you’d expect.

Dr. David Smith says he hasn’t seen a huge influx of patients just yet but he expects to start to see more in the next couple of weeks.

He says this type of weather may mean allergy sufferers notice symptoms earlier in the season but it’s not all bad news. “The good news is, if the temperature stays moderate and there’s no sudden temperature spike, there will actually be a lower pollen delivery than previously,” Dr. Smith explains.

Allergy symptoms can include and itchy, runny nose and eyes, sneezing and itching on the roof of your mouth.

Dr. Smith says, if you think you may have allergies, you should see your doctor because treatment needs to be customized for each person. He says treatment is usually a staged approach. “You try by avoiding pollen exposure. Then secondly, you go to anti-histamines to relieve the itching and the sneezing and you can add something like a nasal steroid or preventive eye drops to not get the symptoms and actually, only as a last resort, do people usual go on injection treatment.”
