Light flu season

It has been a lighter flu season than what Waterloo Region Public Health has seen in years past.
While there has been an increase in other viruses going around this year, the flu bug isn’t one of them.
Registered Nurse & Interim Manager of Infectious Diseases at Public Health Chad Ludwig tells 570 News it’s hard to say why, “we’ve seen heavy flu seasons, we’ve seen light flu seasons in the past, and it’s always hard to say what’s causing that season to be lighter or heavier but I mean, immunization rates, hand-hygiene, and sleeve sneeze, those are all helpful factors in keeping numbers low.”
While the flu season has been a light one, it could change, “there has been a lot of different circulating viruses going around and the potential is still there for us to see an increase in flu.”
To continue to avoid catching the flu, Ludwig says you can still get a flu shot at your family doctors office, which is especially recommended for both the elderly and children.
