WRDSB moving ahead with before-and-after school care program

The Waterloo Region District School Board is moving forward with a before-and-after school care program for students between the ages of 4 and 7.

Trustees voted last night to set up the program in schools where there is no care while third-party operators will be allowed to continue operating in some schools where they currently exist.

This morning’s Record reports the program will run parents $25 a day.

Cindy Watson was the lone trustee to vote against the proposal, telling the newspaper one of her chief concerns is the cost and she’s been told by many parents the $25 fee is too steep.

Students between the ages of 8 and 12 would continue to receive care from third-party providers who would also provide summer childcare.

Currently, only 8 schools have board-operated before-and-after school care.
The board aims to have extended care in all its schools by 2015.
