Cybercrime is still a problem in Canadian cities

Norton and Sperling’s BestPlaces are out with their second annual list looking at cybercrime and the Canadian cities most at risk.

For the second year in a row, Burlington was deemed the riskiest, followed by Port Coquitlam, B.C.

Locally, Kitchener ranked 12th riskiest on the list of 50 cities.

Guelph was 27th and Cambridge was 40th.

Founder of Sperling’s BestPlaces, Bert Sperling stresses “…cities with the greatest risk factors do not necessarily correlate with the highest infection rates, reflecting the fact that many consumers are taking precautions to keep themselves safe.”

Rather, the rankings were based on, among other things, the prevalence of PCs and smartphones, social networking and accessing potentially unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots.

Director of Consumer Solutions at Symantec Canada, Lynn Hargrove recommends “Canadians take a good look at how they are connecting online and what security perimeters they’ve put in place – if they are not certain they are as safe as possible, it’s easy to get educated and make small changes that go a long way to protect their information.”
