Waterloo Catholic District School Board leaves bell times alone

After an extensive consultation with thousands of people, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board has decided not to proceed with changes to bell times.
The changes, if implemented, could have saved the system up to a million dollars a year in transportation costs by co-ordinating bell times with the public board, but in the end, Catholic Board spokesperson John Shewchuk, tells 570 News student safety prevailed over cost-efficiency.
“First and foremost, safety issues have been raised about youngsters having to go to school when it’s still quite dark out in the morning”, says Shewchuk. “On the other side of the coin, there has been a lot concern raised at the secondary school level about later dismissal times interfering with extra-curricular activities and the students’ part-time jobs and that kind of thing.”
Shewchuk says the board heard from over 7,000 people. The decision applies to both elementary and secondary schools.
