‘The door that’s not locked’ is the slogan today, to mark Safer Internet Day.
The initiative was started by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and local police forces, including Waterloo Regional Police are helping spread the word.
Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel tells 570 News, the Internet is very vast and parents need to sit down with their children to discuss the dangers as well as the benefits, “Children can be venturing out into the entire world and exposing themselves and their information to complete strangers, but one of the best forms of protection is learning, educating oneself about the appropriate use of Internet technology and knowing what the safeguards are and what the risks are.”
Heinzel adds, an extreme case that children do need to be aware of as far as misusing the Internet, is adults looking for children for sexual purposes, “And we have seen examples of that where child pornography is being investigated, where people who are possessing that, creating child porn and using the technology in order to distribute that and to harm children in that way.”
Regional police already do a lot to promote safe Internet use, Heinzel says they’ll make presentations in schools, at the children’s safety village and they also have technological crimes investigators who go out and do presentations throughout the community.
