Fire alarms save lives.
That’s the message coming from Waterloo Fire Rescue, after working fire alarms helped residents get out of their homes in two recent fires.
Not only are smoke detectors helpful, Public Education Officer John Percy tells 570 News they’re mandatory by law, “make sure that you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside your sleep areas. They have to be operational at all times, it is the law. Make sure that everyone has a family home fire escape plan. They have to be prepared for a fire, and practice it regularly so that everyone knows what to do if there ever is a fire in their house.”
Percy also recommends getting at least one carbon monoxide detector, to place outside of the sleeping areas, “carbon monoxide poisoning, usually caused by improper function of a fire place, a wood fire stove, sometimes starting your car in your garage. If you have a carbon monoxide leak from that, if you don’t have a carbon monoxide detector, you wont know.”
