Mortality rate also down at GRH

Officials at Grand River Hospital are talking proud today, in the wake of improved results from a national report card on hospital care.
The results have been released from the Canadian Institute for Health Information’s annual hospital standardized mortality ratio (HSMR) report, which measures the patient death rate at Grand River and other hospitals against an expected national average.
For a fifth straight year, Grand River’s ratio has improved, falling to 78 from 80 the year before. Hospital president and CEO, Malcolm Maxwell, tells 570 News, he tips his hat to the entire staff. “One of the sayings around the hospital is quality is a team sport, and the improvements that we have seen are the responsibility of housekeeping staff, and surgeons and pharmacists and a whole lot of other people who have worked hard to make things better”, says Maxwell.
Waterloo Wellington is one of only four local health integration networks in Ontario with a mortality ratio lower than 80. The national average HSMR is 100 for the baseline year of 2004-2005.
