Hot chocolate for diabetes research

A fundraiser aimed at fighting juvenile diabetes is happening today and it’s put on by a young girl affected by the condition.

Emma Ermel has type 1 diabetes and this is her forth year operating a hot chocolate stand, with all proceeds going toward the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Emma’s mom, Amy Ermel told 570 News how her daughter got involved, “[Emma] was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 4 years old. Just a couple of months after that, she had asked me if she could have a hot chocolate sale to raise money towards working for a cure.”

Ever since then, Emma has held the fundraiser, “we do it in November because November is diabetes awareness month,” Ermel said.

The first year of the fundraiser, Ermel said, “was her best year so far,” raising $1,200 dollars. “We’ve been trying to beat that every year, we haven’t done it yet, but we’re hoping that this year we’ll be able to.”

That’s part of what keeps Emma motivated, “all the money we raised the last year, we just want to keep trying to beat it.”

Emma told 570 News that the kids in her class at school thinks her efforts in raising funds are “cool, because some of their family members have diabetes, so then they can understand what is going on with their family members that have it.”

To get yourself a cup of hot chocolate from Emma in support of JDRF, you’ll find her at the Shoppers Drug Mart at Sunrise Centre in Kitchener today from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
