Flu clinic goes today

The first of 14 public flu clinics goes today.
Manager of Vaccine Preventable Disease, Linda Black with Waterloo Public Health says the continuing trend they’re seeing is the number of confirmed flu cases going up, while the number of people getting the shot at a clinic is going down, “our rates were down last year, by about 30%, but out cases of influenza were on the rise. So we saw a lot more influenza and a lot more complications in the community last year.”
But she reminds you that you should get the shot every year, “3 vaccines that are available cover the 3 stains. They’re the same strains that were covered last year, however, immunity does wane, so even if you got the flu vaccine last year, you need to get it again this year.”
“We want to encourage everyone to go out and get the vaccine. And if you’re not doing it for yourself, do it for the people that are vulnerable that are around you…your newborn baby, your elderly mother, who can die from influenza.
Meantime, 570 News spoke with several area residents, and it was a pretty even split between the people who plan on getting the shot and those who won’t.
