Guelph Abortion Debate

It’s an issue that has been debated over and over, and over again. Abortion. An anti-abortion group in Guelph is looking to spark the debate once again.
Jakki Jeffs is a spokesperson for Alliance for life in Guelph and tells 570’s Jeff Allan show that many Canadians have never really thought about the abortion issue.
“Either it’s the fact that you don’t care about the abortion issue, or you’ve not really looked at it, would you just take that hat off.”
She says that a patient should not be allowed to ask their doctor to kill someone.
“We have a Canadian medical association that says, asking a doctor to kill a child that’s growing in your womb, is something between a doctor and the woman. Well, what other medical procedure can one patient ask a doctor to kill another patient?”
On the other side of the coin is the executive director of the abortion rights coalition of Canada, Joyce Arthur, who says the last thing Canada needs is to take steps in reverse.
“Remember they wanted to take us back to the days of the 1960’s when abortion was completely illegal, and women were dying in the back alleys from unsafe abortion.”
Arthur says as far as she is concerned, this debate is over.
“Abortion can’t be banned in Canada because it would violent women’s constitutional rights, to life, to liberty, to bodily security at the conscience.”
The anti-abortion group is sparking the debate again by launching a 14 week campaign to bring the issue back into the public eye.
