It’s a big day to kick off a big weekend at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Morning and afternoon convocation ceremonies are being held during which almost 1,200 students will graduate.
Laurier’s Director of University Relations, Jennifer Casey says both ceremonies will include some special guests. “In the morning ceremony we will be installing our 8th Chancellor to the University, and that’s Mr. Michael Lee-Chin, and we will be bidding a fond farewell to Mr. John Pollock who has served us for the last three years in that role,” she explains.
The afternoon ceremony will include former World Heavyweight Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist Lennox Lewis. He’ll receive an honorary doctor of laws degree and speak to the graduating class.
Casey says Lewis is being honoured for his athletic achievements, “but also significantly is the work that he does through his Lennox Lewis Foundation.”
It’s just the beginning of a number of events the university has planned this weekend. Laurier’s centennial anniversary is on Sunday. To celebrate, they’re holding an opera gala tonight, with the closing centennial event being held tomorrow night.
