Discussions are officially underway between the city and Maple Leaf Foods around establishing a joint task force in Kitchener, following last week’s announcement that local Maple Leaf Foods plant will close in 2014
The partnership that will include representation from both parties and potentially other levels of government or economic development organizations – will look at ways to assist local Maple Leaf Foods employees who are facing job loss once the plant closes.
The joint task force will also seek to develop a strategy for the future use of the plant site.
Chief Strategy Officer Douglas Dodds says he would like to see the task force up and running in the next few weeks.
With three years to determine what the best use of the facility will be he says it’s important they do a thorough analysis.
The 750,000-square-foot plant sits on 25 acres of land on Courtland Avenue.
