Improving Research and Development in Canada

An expert panel has concluded the federal government needs to put its mouth where its money is when it comes to encouraging businesses to innovate.

Tom Jenkens from Open Text was the man leading the panel and he says even though they are recommending change to how the Canadian Government spends 5 billion dollars, don’t expect it in the coming months rather it will be years before change is made.

Jenkins says what they found is they need gather all the programs and agencies that work with business and consolidate it into one council.

At the same time, the panel says the government needs to encourage businesses by measures as simple as buying Canadian-made products in order to encourage their development and establish a clear federal voice for innovation.

The federal minister overseeing the panel says he’s looking forward to reviewing their suggestions but gave no indication whether he’ll implement them.
