Roundabout protest

Pedestrian safety in general continues to be top of mind.
The relationship between pedestrians and motorists is now coming a little further to the forefront – mostly as a byproduct of the simmering debate over roundabouts.
570’s Mike McCulloch was out and about in Kitchener school zones to see how students are handling crossing the road, even when there is no roundabout.
Students at St. Mary’s high school have certainly had enough and they are taking action against the Homer Watson and Block Line roundabout.
A protest is planned for Monday, starting at 8:00am.
This after one of the students’ classmates was hit by a bus Friday morning while crossing the roundabout.
The 16-year-old girl suffered a broken leg in the crash.
Not only are the students planning a protest, but there’s also a petition circulating around the school calling for a safer way to get across. The popular crossing choice according to Facebook is an overhead walkway.
According to the Facebook page that has been set up, the protest will take place at the roundabout and students are being asked by the organizers to make signs so their demand for an overhead walkway is clear.
Ideally, most students would like to see the roundabout changed back to a regular intersection, but they’re also realistic, and that’s why they’re calling for an alternative crossing.
