RIM technical failure causes data backlog

Research In Motion says a technical failure in Europe likely ended up causing a huge backlog of messages worldwide for BlackBerry users, who have experienced three days of outages.

RIM chief technology officer David Yach says messages coming into Europe from Asia and the Americas to BlackBerry users got backed up and started affecting BlackBerry users globally.

Outages for RIM’s instant messaging service, email and Internet browsing started at the beginning of the week in Europe and spread to the Middle East and Africa and to Canada as the company worked to restore service.

The list of affected regions also includes areas of South America, as well as Asian markets including Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and India.

The overseas markets are where RIM has been growing the fastest in the last couple of years.

Yach said all messages in the backlog will be delivered as RIM works around the clock to restore service.
