After a teenaged girl was hit by a Grand River Transit bus on Friday at the Homer Watson and Block Line roundabout, there is a nervous feeling at nearby St. Mary’s High School.
Walkers are taking extra caution when they cross the busy street, “it really is scary for these kids,” said one worried staffer. Some of the students see the accident as an “eye-opener,” with one student saying “I think people are more safe, after that happened, but I still think it’s dangerous.”
Even with that caution, there is concern that the drivers just, don’t stop, “when one car stops, another car will zoom right by,” another concerned staff member said. That message was echoed by some of the students, “people just zoom right through without really thinking,” the student said.
Some believe there should be crossing guards in place, others would like stop signs installed.
Other students spoke of a petition going around to have a pedestrian bridge put up.
Many people want the traffic lights put back.
“I just want this roundabout gone,” one student said with a chuckle.
