Gas leak causes evacuation in Guelph

A gas leak in Guelph earlier today led to the evacuation of a large area of the city.
Residents in the Marlborough Road, Emma Street and Metcalfe Street area were asked to leave their homes just before noon, after emergency crews were called to the area.
They were allowed to go back in around 2 p.m. but Guelph Police Sgt. Doug Pflug says, “If there is the odour of gas inside the home (they should) open up the windows and air it out so that smell can leave their home. If after considerable time, they still smell gas in the home, we encourage them to call the Guelph Fire Department and they’ll come to make sure the levels are adequate.”
Evacuees were taken to the Evergreen Seniors Seniors Centre.
Pflug says the area evacuated was a large one but, “We would rather set up larger perimeters and scale them down as the investigation continues.”
He says the cause of the leak is still being determined but there was construction in the area where the leak began.
