Social Media could hurt your paycheque

Could social media make you a social outcast?

While there aren’t yet any hard-fast laws when it comes to being fired for what you tweet, Morrison and Reist employment lawyer Melanie Reist says there are situations that could get you canned, “for example, there was an individual that was terminated from their employment because they were caught on some of the social media vehicles during the Vancouver Riot.” Reist continues to say pressure was put on the company by its customers who recognized its employee.

Reist outlines a hypothetical situation that could lead to security escort to the exit, “if a senior manager put on facebook or twitter some very seriously derogatory statements toward a peer or a boss, that may be enough.”

“Stay tuned,” Reist says, “for upcoming litigation in wrongful dismissal actions and arbitrations with unions, as social media spreads.
