Sonoco to Close Cambridge Plastics

Sonoco is closing its Cambridge Plastics packaging plant.
Spokesperson, Robin Montgomery, tells 570 News the facility on Franklin Boulevard employs 104 full-time workers, “during the transition period, we’re going to work with every individual employee through the transition and do what we can to help them and certainly help them with out-placement services as well.”
Montgomery says the decision to close the facility is based on changing market conditions, “we’ve had a number of our customers that have actually shifted their production needs into other markets or other regions. the result really has been that our Cambridge plant has become less competitive for that reason.”
Production will be scaled back during the fourth quarter of this year and Montgomery says lay-offs will be made “as necessary” between now and when the plant closes next July.
Montgomery adds that it’s “unfortunate” any time you make a decision to close a plant.
Sonoco, based in Hartsville, South Carolina, bought Associated Packaging Technologies in June 2010.
