Last Car Free Sunday in Waterloo

Today marks the last car free Sunday in Uptown Waterloo.
Waterloo City Councilor Melissa Durrell, tells 570News, Car Free Sunday has been a success this year.
“Beginning in June we’ve had more and more community groups come out and get involved, more people are coming out to participate. If August is any indication we had well over five thousand, we estimate six thousand people, and September we have more than ten different groups coming.”
Durrell adds that she would love to see Car Free Sunday live on in 20-12, and says that it’s up to the community and City Council in Waterloo to make it happen.
“We’ll be looking to the community for sponsorship. I don’t think this should be fully paid for by tax payers. If the community is interested in doing this, I think that businesses should be on board as well.”
Durrell says that Car Free Sunday is not only about closing down King Street to cars. She says it’s about the community making connections and engaging with one another.
