Kitchener pulls the plug on “Car-Free Sundays”

Kitchener City Council has cancelled its participation in the Square 2 Square events in part, due to the cost.  City staff will now study the issue and is expected to come back with a report in time for next year’s budget discussions.

In Waterloo, City Councillor Melissa Durrell spearheaded the drive for “Car-Free Sundays” and tells 570 News she understands Kitchener’s decision. She says it doesn’t change her city’s position saying it’s full steam ahead for the initiative there.  With Kitchener, it involved essentially shutting King Street between the two public squares and opening it up to pedestrians, cyclists, and others.  Durrell calls it an inexpensive way to make a city more livable, and sees it as a benefit to make Waterloo a more people friendly city.
