A University of Waterloo study finds teenage boys are more likely to smoke if their schools are located near a corner store that sells cigarettes.
U-W Health Studies Professor, Scott Leatherdale, tells 570 News it’s the first study to confirm that students are at a greater risk according to the amount of tobacco products sold nearby with male students more likely to buy their own tobacco products. Female students tend to get their cigarettes from friends or family, rather then purchasing their own.
Leatherdale says more than 35-thousand students from 76 Ontario high schools were surveyed in the study and the study did not include the purchase of contraband cigarettes.
