Kitchener teacher charged with fraud

School teachers in Waterloo Region who rallied behind a co-worker allegedly battling cancer are searching for answers after the woman was charged with fraud.

31-year-old Breanne McGuire of Kitchener was arrested in October after allegedly accepting more than $14,000 raised for her experimental cancer treatments.

Staff Sgt. Paul Lobsinger of the fraud branch said McGuire was charged after she, “allegedly led some friends to believe she had cancer.”

Police say the charge relates to a 2008 fundraiser organized for McGuire. Regional police released information about the allegations on Wednesday.

The case is still working its way through the courts and McGuire has not entered a plea.
